Making Mjolnir

One of the most recent projects we have made, or rather remade, is Mjolnir. Mjolnir is the legendary hammer used by Thor, God of Thunder, in Norse mythology, popularized by his Depiction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The base of this project was a metal replica of the hammer we had found on ebay. It was sturdy, heavy, and cool looking, but something was off about it.
The grip looked boring. The metal was dull, almost gray. So I decided to strip it down to its bare parts and refinish it entirely. The grip was a bunch of small plastic pieces that I tumbled for an even finish, spray painted a semi gloss medium brown, and then weathered and darkened with a black oil paint. In my opinion, the grip turned out much better that the odd orange color it used to be. Now it looks like a dark worn leather
The metal was a bit more tricky. It has this dull gray paint over the actual metal that took away from the realistic aesthetics. The pommel and grip rings were tumbled and sanded for a bright shiny finish. As for the head of the hammer, I sanded off that gray top coat with an orbital sander using various grits working my way up. Once I had just the bare metal, I began hand sanding to get a straight grain in the metal. After everything had a nice even finish, I did some wet sanding to really make it shine. With the final result, you can see yourself in the hammer.
Last but not least was the leather strap. The original came with a plastic like strap that felt cheap and would break any second. I replaced it using two kinds of genuine leather, giving the inside and outside two different colors and textures.
After everything was finished, I did the final assembly. Unfortunately I did not have the power to control lightning itself but nevertheless the hammer looked pretty cool.
